Clara H. Carlson School in Elmont recently hosted its first annual “My Story” event to celebrate the community’s diverse cultures.

Students in grades first through sixth who have immigrated to the United State within the past two years presented and shared their stories during the event. Families, faculty and administrators were invited to attend.

The event, which was inspired by a similar project at a Hampton Bays school, was led by sixth grad teachers Jenna Naclerio and Jessica Trione. They were assisted by the “My Story” committee, which was comprised of the school art teacher, English as a New Language and Social Emotional Learning staff members.

with the SEL and ENL teams. After brainstorming ideas, the students wrote their personal stories in both English and their native language. The students then illustrated their journeys with the guidance of Clara H. Carlson's art teacher. The students’ projects lined the walls in the gymnasium where the culminating event was held.

At the “My Story” event, some students read aloud their pieces in English and others shared their stories in their native language. Some of the countries represented included Haiti, Ecuador and Guatemala.

After the students’ presentations, guests were invited to walk around and view the students’ projects and eat homemade food from some of their home countries.
