For two days, student artists took over the Long Beach High School gymnasium as the district-wide art show returned for its annual display. More than 1,000 pieces of artwork — from intricate sculptures to detailed pencil drawings — created an impressive gallery for the evening of May 29 and the morning and early afternoon of May 30.

Odyssey of the Mind could be one of the most interesting and challenging competitions a school can enter. Combining problem solving, creative thinking, theatrical performance, technology, engineering and sometimes music, students compete to solve unique scenarios. This year, the Long Beach Elementary team for Problem 3 came home from the world finals in Ames, Iowa with a rank of first in the world for long-term performance and a rank of 8th in the world overall.

Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly has announced an indictment for Heather Magone, a Long Beach resident. Magone was charged with attempted kidnapping in the second degree, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment, and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. On May 28, Magone appeared in Nassau County Court before Judge Robert Bogle, where she pleaded not guilty.

The Kelly Forman Team at Compass opened their brand-new office at 38 West Park Ave., Suite 200, in Long Beach. Forman and her six-person team joined Compass Real Estate in December 2021. She has lived in Long Beach for nearly two decades and said her team looks forward to helping community members with their real estate needs.

A current Long Beach city ordinance states, excluding permission of the city council and fire commissioner, "No person shall discharge or use any firearms, rockets, torpedoes, Roman candles or other explosives in any of the streets, highways, boardwalk, beach or public places within the city. The sale of fireworks at retail in the city is prohibited." At the June 2 Long Beach City Council meeting, the maximum penalty for violating the law — which has been in place since July 1972 — rose from $250 to $15,000.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Ferretti and other Town Board members, including Town Clerk Kate Murray and Commissioner of Parks and Recreation William Hawkins, spoke at Lido Golf Club on June 11 to announce upcoming improvements to the course. Due to the potential disruption, greens fees will be reduced by 50 percent to encourage golfers to play the course during renovations.

At its June 2 meeting, the Long Beach City Council voted unanimously to modernize the language in the city’s code of ordinances. As it is currently written, the law restricts “wagons, horses, carts, automobiles, motorcycles and motorized bicycles” from operating on sidewalks, the beach or the boardwalk. It will now outlaw e-bikes as well as electric and motorized scooters.

As Long Beach natives Alexis Ricoy and Scarlett Anderson rose through the ranks of Scouts BSA, they worked toward becoming Eagle Scouts — the highest honor in scouting. On May 30, the two friends achieved that goal together at a Court of Honor ceremony at St. Agnes Parish Center, in Rockville Centre.
