Long Beach resident Michael Skudin received the Captain Andrew J. DiMaggio Award. The award commemorates the life of Andrew J. DiMaggio, a member of the New Rochelle Fire Department known for his impact on the fire service through his instruction and mentorship. Skudin noted he was excited to bring the skills he learned back to Long Beach and help keep the city safe. more

While Jan. 1 is celebrated as the start of the conventional new year across the globe, the Lunar New Year is recognized in many cultures to honor the start of spring and mark the beginning of the lunisolar calendar. In 2026, the Lunar New Year begins on Feb. 17. On Feb. 15, Artists in Partnership will host a two-part Lunar New Year event at the Long Beach Public Library. more

The Long Beach City Council understands that while the beach closes for the offseason, that doesn’t mean the city’s professional water-rescue team — more than 150 paid service people including lifeguards, EMTs and officers — treat the winter as a four-month-long vacation. The council recently authorized the purchase of two 2025 Yamaha WaveRunners to facilitate lifeguard activities on the water, and also agreed to buy two Nissan Frontier 4x4 pickup trucks to support land operations. more
When James “Jimmy” Finch started working at Country Boy Bakery in 1984, the entirety of his baking experience was a pilot program at BOCES. Now, at age 58 and with over four decades of much more practical experience, he is retiring. more
Lingering snow and ice from the Jan. 25 storm have forced the postponement of the Polar Bear Splash and Snowflake 4-Mile Run in Long Beach. Informally known as Fern, the winter storm dumped 11 inches of snow in whiteout conditions. Because of the prolonged subfreezing conditions, it’s making the snow and ice more difficult to clear. more
At the Jan. 20 Long Beach City Council meeting, board members unanimously agreed to authorize City Manager Daniel Creighton to renew the Long Beach Fire Department’s contract with the Lawrence/Cedarhurst Fire Department. This allows the LBFD to continue providing fire, ambulance, and emergency dispatch services for the nearby community. more

Charlie McAvoy has made it from the Long Beach Ice Arena to the 2026 Winter Olympics. The Long Beach native and NHL pro will play for Team USA in men’s ice hockey at the 2026 Milano Cortina Games. McAvoy is the sole Long Islander competing in this year’s Olympics. more
