When Rabbi Jack Zanerhaft arrived at Temple Emanu-El of Long Beach in March 2017, he quickly got to work connecting with the community. One of his early priorities was establishing a distinct Shabbat service, specifically on the Friday before Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to recognize the lasting impact and lessons of the civil rights leader. On Jan. 16, Rabbi Zanerhaft oversaw the 10th consecutive MLK Shabbat service at the temple on Neptune Boulevard. more
The Long Beach Fire Department is kickstarting the new year with an influx of new safety and rescue gear. At the Long Beach City Council meeting on Jan. 6, the board approved the purchase nearly $330,000 worth of essential “bunker gear” — the durable jackets, pants and boots worn by firefighters — as well as four brand new defibrillator/monitor units, all headed to the LBFD. more
Jessica Hernandez, an Oceanside resident, has always looked for ways to help children in the community. Now, she’s pivoting to children abroad with Pencils of Promise — a nonprofit that supports children in impoverished communities in Guatemala, Laos and Ghana. On Jan. 11, Hernandez helped to coordinate a fundraiser for Pencils of Promise at Barrier Brewing Company’s Long Beach location on East Park Avenue. more
It was standing-room-only at City Hall as the Long Beach City Council welcomed one re-elected incumbent and two new members on New Year’s Day. George Ennis and Tracey Johnson were sworn in for their first terms, while Michael Reinhart, who was first elected in 2023, took the oath of office for the second time. Reinhart and Ennis began four-year terms, while Johnson, who garnered the third-highest vote total in last November’s election, will serve for two years. more
Nearly 18,000 people attended a tribute to the 15 victims of the Bondi Beach massacre in Sydney, Australia, at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center just days after last month’s shooting, and teens from Chabad Teen chapters in Long Beach and the Five Towns joined the Chabad Teen Network, known as CTEEN, in solidarity as they remembered those who died. more
