The annual Long Beach Arts and Crafts Boardwalk Festival is approaching 40 years of presenting small businesses during a summer weekend — this year, it was held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a rainy July 11 and picture-perfect July 12. While food trucks and booths offered tasty treats from classic zeppoles to shaved ice, many local businesses were among the vendors. Over 200 vendor booths stretched from Long Beach Boulevard to Edwards Boulevard. more
Shootout for Soldiers — the annual 24-hour lacrosse game and fundraiser — took place at the new Point Lookout Athletic Complex, marking the first time hosting the event in the Town of Hempstead. Along with a new game starting every hour, beginning at 9 a.m. July 8 and concluding at 9 a.m. Thursday, the nonstop event included community engagement activities and veteran recognition. more
Around 11:30 a.m. on July 16, Town of Hempstead beaches — Lido, Point Lookout, Malibu and Nickerson — were shut down after a shark was seen off the coast. The size and species of the shark are currently unknown. Beachgoers were pulled from the water until lifeguards and the town's Shark Patrol completed a search of the area using Jet Skis and drones. more
The City of Long Beach has coordinated with the Long Beach Arts Council to invite local artists to paint murals on the beachfront ticket booths along the boardwalk. After the first phase, the renovation of six booths, was completed in May, the project was expanded to an additional 10 booths. In early July, the work was finished, and the booths were officially unveiled. more
Daniel Creighton, 55, a Long Beach resident for nearly 10 years, was hired as Long Beach city manager in January 2024. He was offered a new contract after a unanimous City Council vote at the July 7 council meeting. Creighton’s two-year contract technically began on Jan. 3, and runs through Jan. 2, 2028. more
