The G2H Foundation and the City of Long Beach returned to the Long Beach Municipal Ice Arena for the 4th annual Gerrin Hagen Memorial Hockey Day on April 11.
G2H is a local nonprofit supporting community-based charities, first-responder charities and families in need. Formed in March 2023, it honors the memory of Gerrin Hagen.
Hagen died in January 2023 just two weeks after his 18th birthday. He was struck from behind by a Honda SUV that ran a stop sign while attempting to pass another vehicle. Hagen was studying carpentry in the mornings at Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center — heading to his car to drive to Long Beach High School for his afternoon classes.
The day began with a morning clinic for Long Beach Lighting players, ages 8 through 11, coached by Long Beach Lightning staff and the Farmingdale State College Hockey Team.
At 2:30 p.m., the Nassau County Police Department Hockey Team took on the FDNY Hockey Team. The FDNY secured a 6-1 victory. At 5:00 PM the Toronto Fire Hockey Club faced the Long Beach Guardians Hockey Club, with the Guardians also claiming a 6-1 victory.
Fans participated in a T-shirt launch, bubble ball races, a 50/50 raffle and fundraisers — including the Chuck-A-Puck contest, where fans threw pucks onto the ice aiming for targets, with proceeds benefiting the G2H foundation.
