The Long Beach Theatre Guild will present a sensory friendly performance of “Oliver” — a stage and film musical adapted from Charles Dicken’s 1838 novel “Oliver Twist,” with book, music and lyrics written by Lionel Bart.
The guild, founded in 1972, has staged more than 100 musicals and plays and, five years ago, was inspired by a former member of its board to host performances for children with sensory sensitivities and processing challenges. The board member, a theater fan, wanted her autistic son, and other neurodivergent residents, to enjoy plays and musicals as most would.
“It’s special because it addresses a community need where people who normally wouldn’t get to go to the theater can get to go to the theater,” Nancy Gallinaro, the guild’s president and director said. “During these performances, the guest is trained to be cognizant of the fact that [distractions] might happen. The volunteers in the audience can bring the individual to a quiet room or bring them to someplace where they might feel a little more comfortable.”
“Oliver” will be held in Lindell Elementary School’s theater, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m.; the sensory-friendly performance, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m.; Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.
At this year’s sensory performance, the guild will provide assistive learning devices so audience members can tailor the sound as needed.
“Our performances are part of an amazing community program where over 63 adults and children are on stage,” Gallinaro said. “Your neighbors, your friends, your family, on stage performing. It’s huge and probably the biggest cast we’ve ever had.”
