When Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre (HERJC) started its nursery school in 1969, there were only two classes. Since then it has increased in size, extended hours, and the amount of programs that are offered. Having added programs such as art, music, Jewish Enrichment and Mommy and Me, the nursery school has grown to nearly 200 children, ranging in ages from 10 months to 5 years.

Everett Janes was known throughout East Rockaway and Lynbrook as “Digger” because of his passion for the bay and for digging clams. “You would always find him tinkering around with an engine whether it was a boat or a car,” said his daughter, Susie Torborg. “He enjoyed having a good time and was often the life of the party.”

“We have the highest taxes here, and Nassau can’t even pay their bills,” said Carol Ann Sustad-Renz, a Lynbrook native, reacting to county voters’ rejection on Aug. 1 of a proposal to borrow $400 million to build a new arena and minor league baseball stadium at the site of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale. “… [T]he county is broke, but yet they would have found the money somewhere or somehow — yes, on the backs of us taxpayers.”
