East Rockaway Middle School Robotics teams participated in the Long Island F.I.R.S.T. Lego League regional qualifying tournament on Saturday, Feb. 4, here team “PopRocks” took first place in the Robot Programming and Design category. This qualifies them to participate in the Long Island Finals at Longwood High School on Mar. 6.
The overall winner of this event will go on the 2011 World Festival held April 27 through 30, 2011 at the America’s Center and Edward Jones Dome Convention Plaza in St. Louis, MO.

For several local school districts, balancing budgets is becoming a daunting challenge. Higher pension costs, a loss of state aid and a possible state tax cap have many school officials looking to tighten their spending plans.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo released his first budget proposal on Feb. 1, and districts are being told to tap into their reserve funds to make up for the possible, impending state aid cutbacks and a proposed 2 percent tax cap. Many administrators say they have few options for dealing with increasing costs.

Bracing for what school officials call “drastic cuts,” the Lynbrook and East Rockaway school districts, along with others in New York state, could face harsh financial realities following the Feb. 1 release of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s first proposed state budget, which calls for a 7.3 percent reduction in education aid next year. The state legislature will amend teh executive’s proposal and has an April 1 deadline to pass a complete state budget of which state aid is a part.

The sixth annual Patrick Xavier Owens’ Games were held at East Rockaway High School on Jan. 22. Organized Alan Owens, the games are in the memory his brother, Patrick, a brave young boy who died in 1997 at the age of five.
