Lynbrook’s Character Counts Committee welcomed guest speaker Joseph A. Califano, Jr., 78, to an open forum on Mar. 2 at the Marion Street Elementary School to speak about his book “How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid.” The event attracted more than 200 concerns parents, educators and residents. more
The seniors at East Rockaway High School earned the coveted Cup last weekend during the school's 74th annual Rock Rivalry competition. Points were tallied and included Sports Night, Entrance, mural, backdrop, scriptwriting, choreography, band, lighting, sound, etc. The seniors' score tied for one other class in the history of RR for having the most points in its 74-year history. All of the classes did wonderfully, with entertaining and orginal skits and songs. more

During the final budget work session for the Lynbrook School District, officials said the spending increase from this year's to next is 3.42 percent and estimate the tax levy increase to be 5.42 percent. The total budget for 2010-11 would be $60,735,040. more
Michael McHale, a 16-year-old student at Lynbrook High School, was hit by a westbound, non-passenger train at the Lynbrook Long Island Rail Road station at about 5:40 p.m. on March 9, Metropolitan Transit Authority officials said. McHale was later pronounced dead at South Nassau Communities Hospital. The Lynbrook Fire Department was called to the station platform, answering a report of a person being hit by a train, said Steve Grogan, spokesman for the department. Grogan said McHale did not respond to resusitation efforts, and was rushed to the hospital. Sam Zambuto, spokesman for the Long Island Rail Road, said that the MTA police are investigating the incident as a possible suicide. As a result of the incident, service was affected on the Babylon branch, and riders were redirected to the Long Beach branch, according to Zambuto. more

Lynbrook High School’s Facing History and Ourselves Club has launched its second annual campaign to raise money for impoverished schools in Northern Uganda. They will once again be working through an international relief organization called Invisible Children that builds schools and provides scholarships for poor and orphaned children who would otherwise not receive an education. more
