The newest addition to the National Lacrosse League will be calling Long Island home but for one member of the New York Riptide, coming to Long Island is more of a homecoming. When the power generators are running on diesel fuel at the Bay Park Water Reclamation Facility at times each day, a plume of yellow smoke can be seen spewing from the plant, filling the air in nearby yards and parks with odors and toxins. That has residents worried about the potential health effects of inhaling diesel exhaust. more

The lack of diversity in Long Island’s teaching ranks was the subject of extensive discussion at the Long Island Educator Diversity Convening at Hofstra University last spring. Study: 92% of L.I. teachers are white

Ninety-two percent of Long Island public-school teachers are white. In nearly two-thirds of Long Island schools, there are no black teachers. In more than two-fifths of them, there are no Latino teachers. And most children grow up in segregated communities that divide along school district lines. more

Islanders fans happy so much of 2019-20 will be in the Old Barn

That the 2019-20 New York Islanders season began at the Nassau Coliseum Friday night was the way it had to be, said Brandon Gimpelman of North Bellmore. After four years of opening nights at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Gimpleman, while attending the Islanders rally Thursday outside the Nassau County legislature in Mineola, summed up local fans’ feelings that “it’s great to be back at the Coliseum given the history and everything else. It is the Old Barn and we will be very happy to be there.” more
