The offices of Drs. Robert Florio participated in the “Cash for Candy” program recently, trading sweets for dollars — and then sending the goodies to troops overseas.

“It was so successful, said It went over so well, we extended it an extra day,” said Dr. Kohner. “We collected more than 320 pounds of candy.”

The students are Waverly Park school, upon reading the article “One sweet idea” in the Oct. 15-21 issue of the Herald, were encouraged tto get involved and dropped off over 150 pounds of candy. Drs. Florio and Kohner gave each contributor dollars for pounds, as well as flashing toothbrushes that light up for one minute letting kids know how long to brush their teeth. Everyone involved signed a large card for the troops who were to receive the sweets.

“We would like to thank the community for making the Halloween candy buy back a huge success,” said Kohner. “I’m sure the troops will put it to good use.” The candy was collected and will be shipped to Operation Gratitude headquarters in California, where it is then repackaged into care packages and sent to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
