A fundraiser was held last Sunday at the bayside Reel Restaurant in East Rockaway to help and welcome back former owner Charlie Lunenfeld to East Rockaway.
Diagnosed in 2012 with Guillain-Barré syndrome, an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the nervous system, Lunenfeld was paralyzed throughout most of his body. He is making a remarkable recovery, and was at the event to greet everyone.
“It was amazing, but a bit overwhelming emotionally, to see so many people who showed up for this event,” said Lunefeld. “It shows truly how blessed I am to be loved and cared for especially during such tough time in my life.” Lunefeld also thanked the Reel owners and staff for throwing a great party. “God bless all — and see you on the deck soon!”
Owner Shaun Manning, who runs Reel with Lou Matarazzi, said that he was very pleased with the turnout, and that Lunenfeld will received $5,000, thanks to the neighborhood’s generosity.
“There are so many here to welcome Charlie home,” he said. “It was a great turnout, and Charlie was welcomed back by so many members of the community.”
