Patricia Canzoneri-Callahan won Tuesday's Malverne special village election, securing a three-year term on the village's Board of Trustees.

Canzoneri-Callahan, of the Independent Party of Malverne, garnered 767 votes, defeating challenger Carol Hassett, who earned 537 votes. Village Clerk and Elections Commissioner Terry Emmel made the announcement shortly after polls closed at 9 p.m. at the Malverne firehouse, where more than 50 residents awaited election results.

Canzoneri-Callahan was appointed to the village board by Mayor Patricia Ann Norris-McDonald last July, after the sudden death of her husband, Deputy Mayor James Callahan. Having completed the first year of her husband's four-year term, she ran in the special election for the remainder of the term.

"This was a very special win-I can carry out my husband's term," she said after the results were announced. "He was devoted-he was one of the most diligent public servants I've known."

Canzoneri-Callahan thanked her family, including her four children, who stood by her side on Tuesday, and all those who supported her in the special village election.

"So many people worked hard for this campaign," she said. "This really was a special win."
