Early in the morning on Dec. 21, the Lakeview Fire Department responded to a fire on the Southern State Parkway that resulted from a multi-vehicle accident.

A driver was traveling westbound on the parkway at a high speed when he struck two other cars and lost control of his vehicle near Exit 19. The driver took down a streetlight and a 40-feet of the guardrail. The car then overturned and caught fire.

Lakeview Fire Department arrived at the site of the fire within eight minutes of receiving the call around 3 a.m. Chief Stefan Fisher was in command at the scene.

“It took an extended amount of time to extinguish the fire due to the presence of exotic metals that react to water and a ruptured gas tank,” Fisher told the Herald in a text. He said foam was used to extinguish the fire.

“The members of the Lakeview Fire Department operated professionally despite it being very late and cold,” he said. “They recognized that a different approach would be necessary and switched to a foam operation seamlessly.”

Five vehicles were involved in the collision. The driver responsible fled the scene.

A section of the parkway near Exit 19 was closed down for several hours due to the accident.
