Malverne students, parents, small business owners and civic leaders came out to Malverne High School on June 14 to celebrate Juneteenth. The holiday, on the 19th, celebrates the anniversary of when slaves in Texas found out that they were free, three years after Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

“While celebrating Juneteenth uplifts the large Black community we have at the school, it also serves as a reminder to all students regardless of background that everybody deserves to be free and treated with respect,” said Kaiden Ulysse, 16, who played a large role in organizing this year’s event.

The event saw musical performances and poetry readings, as well as a speech from Laura Harding, director of ERASE Racism.
