West Hempstead food drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank

West Hempstead residents can donate food and household essentials Aug. 21 when PSEG Long Island brings its Power to Feed Long Island summer collection initiative to the community for the first time.

The collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside Stop & Shop, 50 Cherry Valley Ave. Residents can donate nonperishable food, personal care products and household essentials.

The West Hempstead collection is one of eight summer events organized by PSEG Long Island to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank. Island Harvest will distribute the donated items through food pantries, soup kitchens and other programs serving people facing food insecurity.

PSEG Long Island created the summer initiative in response to a seasonal decline in donations to food banks and pantries. Summer can also create additional challenges for families whose children receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year.

Over the past five years, Long Islanders have donated the equivalent of nearly 153,000 meals through Power to Feed Long Island, according to PSEG Long Island.

Employee volunteers, Island Harvest representatives and PSEG Long Island's Power to Feed ambassador, CaLI, are expected to participate in the West Hempstead collection.

Residents can also find information about requested donations or contribute online through Power to Feed Long Island. For more information, visit PSEGLINY.com/FeedLI.
