The West Hempstead School District Board of Education officially began a new year of leadership during its annual reorganization meeting on July 7, swearing in returning trustees, electing board officers and making annual appointments ahead of the 2026-27 school year.
Superintendent Daniel Rehman chaired the opening portion of the meeting before District Clerk Awilda Cruz administered the oaths of office to trustees George Damanis and Joseph Magaraci, who were each sworn in to serve new three-year terms on the Board of Education. The board then elected its officers for the 2026-27 school year. Karen Brohm was unanimously re-elected to serve her 14th consecutive term as board president, while Joseph Magaraci was elected vice president.
Brohm subsequently administered the oaths of office to Cruz, who will continue serving as district clerk and secretary to the Board of Education, and District Treasurer Taylor Weissberger.
The annual reorganization meeting established the board’s leadership structure and organizational appointments while positioning the district for the start of the 2026-27 school year. Board members will now continue preparations for the upcoming academic year with leadership, committees and administrative appointments in place.
