When New York state debuted new standardized tests for third- to eighth-graders in English and math last year, a handful of Merrick parents told school administrators that they would not allow their children to take them. Earlier this month, the number of students whose parents have joined this protest nearly doubled at Merrick Avenue Middle School, more than doubled in the North Merrick School District and more than tripled in the Merrick School District.

A month ago, Calhoun High School Principal David Seinfeld reached out to Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District officials with a heavy heart. Saul Lerner, the district’s director of health and physical education, said Seinfeld called to say that he was worried because he had recently attended three funerals of former Calhoun students, all of whom had died of heroin overdoses.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s 2014-15 budget is set to rise by 1.97 percent, from $136.5 million this year to a little more than $139 million next year. And, despite a lower-than-hoped-for state aid increase of $200,000, the district does not plan to cut services for students. In fact, it is restoring some services such as BOCES dance, which had been cut during the leanest years of the 2008-09 recession and its aftermath.

The Kennedy High School science department is sponsoring its first-ever Health and Career Fair in the school’s cafeteria on Tuesday, March 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. The fair is open to the public, and all are welcome, said Barbi Frank, a Kennedy Advanced Placement biology teacher and one of the event’s organizers.

All five Bellmore-Merrick school districts –– including Bellmore-Merrick, Bellmore, Merrick, North Bellmore and North Merrick –– have announced that they will delay school by two hours on Thursday, Feb. 13, owing to an winter storm that battered parts of the South and rolled across Long Island on Thursday morning.
