As everyone knows, the East Coast was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy on Oct. 29. People lost power. Many lost their homes. Some even lost their lives.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is planning an evening to offer local residents the opportunity to discuss the challenges that they faced during Hurricane Sandy. Titled “Coping with the Aftereffects of Superstorm Sandy: An Evening to Listen, Learn and Share,” the session will be led by credentialed disaster-support professionals from the American Red Cross, and will be held in the Mepham High School auditorium on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m.

Seemingly out of nowhere, a pickup truck hauling a landscaper’s trailer pulled up in front of the Brookside School in North Merrick. It was filled with cleaning and baby-care supplies, all neatly labeled, a gift from an anonymous donor. Bellmore-Merrick Central District officials said they believed the donation came from a district retiree.

Gloria Chapman was once Gloria Dinger. She once lived on Kenneth Avenue in North Bellmore, after moving into her home in 1933. She once climbed an apple tree when playing with friends near Camp Avenue, which had only four houses and a farm when she was in elementary school.

Middle school is a time of change and turbulence in students’ lives –– a high-speed transition from late childhood to early adulthood. Ensuring that students make that leap in a way that respects their social and emotional needs while providing an academically rich –– and demanding –– environment is the job of the middle school principal.
This coming school year, both Grand Avenue Middle School and Merrick Avenue Middle School will have new principals, each with years of experience as a classroom teacher and an administrator.

Last Thursday was prom night, and before the dance got under way, seniors from all three Bellmore-Merrick high schools –– Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham –– held their own pre-prom celebrations at one another’s homes, as is tradition.
