For 10 straight years, starting in 2007, New York state has reduced aid to libraries. Now Gov. Andrew Cuomo is proposing to cut another $4 million in library funding in the 2017-18 state budget, due April 1. That is unacceptable.

Research from the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, compiled from three years of publicly available water quality reports, found high levels of 1,4 dioxane in water serviced by the 39 water districts, including the Water Authority of Western Nassau, the Franklin Square Water District, New York American Water’s Lynbrook and Merrick Operations Districts, and the Town of Hempstead Water District.

By March 1, homeowners who are involved in the program must submit a Scope of Work Itemization Form 6100 and Scope of Work Change Request. In other words, when someone lifts his or her home, there is an initial cost estimate that is approved in a grant request from NY Rising. Once the house-elevation process begins there are cost overruns and unanticipated challenges that cause homeowners to file change orders. If these orders are not filed by the deadline, the homeowner will have to pay out of pocket. The second deadline set by NY Rising is Sept. 1, by which all residents involved must have their houses lifted.

Nassau County residents rallied outside New York American Water’s Headquarters in Merrick as part of an ongoing protest against the company’s intended rate increase. The increase has been pending since June 2016. In that time, residents have criticized NYAW for providing them with dirty water, low pressure, low-quality service and high bills. Tempers continue to flare with the public comment period for another component of the plan nearing its end.
