Students at Old Mill Road Elementary School in North Merrick had a chance to stretch their legs and have a ball while also raising funds for the PTA during Winterfest at the school on Jan. 21. Kids engaged in all sorts of crafts, games and sports during the daylong event, which gave children a little respite from the cold and snow outside. There was even a tennis court set up in the gymnasium. more
Merrick Fire Department volunteers were called to extinguish a car fire that engulfed a blue Audi that was parked at the Merrick Long Island Rail Road station in the middle of Wednesday afternoon. Black smoke billowed from the car and could be seen for blocks around. The blaze, though, was quickly contained, and it did not spread to surrounding vehicles. The cause of the fire was unclear, and no one was hurt. more
The North Merrick School District will hold a facilities referendum on Monday, Dec. 12, from 2 to 10 p.m. at Fayette Elementary School, giving the North Merrick community the opportunity to vote on the expenditure of $1.2 million of a $1.4 million capital reserve fund to make repairs at Camp Avenue, Old Mill Road and Fayette elementary schools. more
