Board meeting heats up over air-conditioning
Air-conditioning –– or the lack of it –– became a heated topic at the Merrick School District Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Before Barbara Byrne even reached the North Merrick Board of Education room, she accepted congratulatory hugs from supporters and life-long friends on her retirement. Once she settled in her seat, with her husband, John Byrne, by her side, she quietly waited for the meeting to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Byrne worked for the North Merrick School District for 31 years as a lunch monitor and special-education aide at Old Mill Road Elementary School. Working with children was always a fun, exciting experience, she said. more

Josh Levine, 16, of Merrick, at right, suffered a concussion in a Kennedy High School junior-varsity baseball game last spring, when a runner slammed into him while he was playing catcher. He was knocked unconscious and now struggles to concentrate and read. He was joined here by his family in April at the annual 5K Robbie’s Run that they sponsor in honor of his late brother, who died while rounding the bases during a Little League practice.
