Alexa Fronte, a fourth-grader at Old Mill Road Elementary School in North Merrick, is among the winners in the 11th annual Child Abuse Prevention Services Bully Prevention Poster and Poetry Contest. More than 1,500 students from 57 Long Island schools submitted entries to the competition. The winning 12 posters and three poems will be featured in the 2010-11 CAPS School Year Calendar, to be distributed this fall.

With the sun burning down at midday, it was a hot one on June 24, well past the 90-degree mark. The parched infield at Merrick Road Park in Merrick turned into a mini-dust bowl whenever a play was made in the double-header between the Floral Park Knights and the Glen Cove Cobras.

More than 40 kids ran, jumped and played at the third annual Merr-O-Lympics at Chatterton Elementary School on May 16.
Elementary and middle school students had the opportunity to participate in five activities, including the standing long jump, vertical jump, sit and reach, and more at the event hosted by the Merrick Kiwanis Club.
