Updated 11:41 a.m., March 21: Two men carjacked a silver 2006 Infiniti G35 from Ohio Avenue in Hicksville, and one of them crashed it into the back of Fayette Elementary School in North Merrick, seven miles away, sometime between noon and 1 p.m. on March 20, according to Nassau County Police. Both men were apprehended and charged with multiple crimes.

For the fourth consecutive year, the 16-mile stretch of Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County was named the deadliest road for pedestrians in the tristate area by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. The 2012 report, “Most Dangerous Roads for Walking,” was released on March 7.

Updated Feb. 28, 12:10 p.m.: Fire gutted the garage of a Loines Avenue home in Merrick on Feb. 26 and quickly spread to the house itself, sending smoke billowing throughout the home, melting the front siding and setting an SUV in the front driveway ablaze. The fire, officials said, was allegedly started by a Brentwood man who had broken into the garage between 5:30 and 6:15 a.m.
