$39 million bond fails in North Bellmore Schools

A $39 million bond failed to pass yesterday in the North Bellmore School District.

Throughout the summer and beginning of the school year, the district has been presenting the findings of its state-mandated, buildings conditions survey, that was submitted to the state in early 2021.

The need for some extensive rennovations, including a complete overhaul of the HVAC system in every school building, and the addition of elevators in five school buildings, were shared with district taxpayers in these presentations.

In October, the Board of Education adopted a $39 million bond for these rennovations to take place.

Late last night, in a statement from the district, it was announced that the bond did not pass. Over 1100 residents cast their votes, with 533 voters in approval for the proposition, and 628 voters against it.

"This was a very close margin, with over 45 percent approval to upkeep the district's aging infrastructure," Superintendent Marie Testa wrote. "The Board of Education and I appreicate all of the voters who came out (yesterday), and we look forward to continuing our work on behalf of the North Bellmore community."

The district also said it would work strategically to address necessary capital projects and recommendations as indicated in the district's buidling condtions survey.

More to follow.
