2. Focus on maintaining programs and expanding student opportunities
In Merrick, the proposed budget maintains all existing programs, staffing levels and student services, while continuing investments in instruction, wellness and school safety. The district also emphasized preserving academic programming and extracurricular opportunities.
In North Merrick, the district is building on recent curriculum initiatives, including literacy programs aligned with the Science of Reading, strengthened math instruction and expanded social studies and science offerings. The budget also supports a K-6 foreign language program and introduces a dedicated technology teacher to enhance coding and digital learning.
3. Tax levy increases stay within allowable caps, with added proposition in Merrick
Merrick’s tax levy would increase by 1.73 percent, while North Merrick’s levy would rise by 2.53 percent, both within their allowable limits.
In addition to the budget, Merrick voters will consider Proposition No. 2, which would authorize the use of $2.2 million in capital reserve funds for roof replacements at Birch and Lakeside schools and a boiler replacement at Birch. If approved, the work is expected to be completed in summer 2027 with no additional tax impact.
Residents in both districts will vote on the budgets, board seats and propositions during the upcoming school election.
