Students test their hypotheses at science fair

Students at Winthrop Avenue School put their understanding of the scientific method on display during a science fair held Feb. 12 in the Bellmore School District.

Third graders, known as “Winning Star Leaders,” spent weeks developing projects after learning how to form hypotheses, identify variables and draw conclusions. Students worked independently or with partners to design experiments that applied those skills.

Projects covered a wide range of topics. Some students explored physical traits, such as pulse rate and heart function, while others created hands-on demonstrations. Experiments included comparing volcanic eruptions using Mentos and soda, growing plants with different liquids and testing which objects could complete electrical circuits.

At the conclusion of the fair, each participant received a certificate recognizing their work and their successful exploration of the scientific process.
