As Tuesday’s first day of school drew nearer, some of the most excited children in Oceanside and Island Park were those who were about to start kindergarten. With new backpacks and notebooks, folders and pencils, may were looking forward to their first full days of school.

They don’t make ’em like they used to — not now nor back then. I’m talking about bars with live bands, and none on the South Shore was better than Carol’s Place in Island Park during the 1980s and ’90s.

After years of (literally) jetting between Florida and New York, among other places, as a Pan Am pilot, Victor Nitlow, a lifelong Island Park resident, decided to settle down in his other home in Naples, Fla., in 1980.
