Last Sept. 11 marked the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, a terrible day on which more than 3,000 people, including dozens of South Shore residents, died.

Next week, when students return to classes, they will be greeted by new teachers, meet some new classmates and may even notice the shiny floors and clean desks.

The days are becoming noticeably shorter, and the air is gradually turning cooler. Children have returned from camp. Vacations spent at the beach or in the mountains are ending.

Last August, Tropical Storm Irene hit Long Island hard, ravaging neighborhoods across the South Shore. There was massive flooding, thousands of downed trees and widespread property damage.

Reasonable citizens of all parties, from way liberal to far right, agree that while the First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech, we can’t shout “Fire!” in a crowded theater if there’s no fire.

Lightning flashed across the night sky on the Fourth of July, and wakes from nearby boats rolled across what were relatively calm waters only minutes earlier.

Every day, Nassau and Suffolk counties’ roughly 2.8 million inhabitants draw 375 million gallons of water from the ground to boil spaghetti, wash their cars, water their lawns and, of course, drink, among thousands of other uses, according to the Long Island Water Conference, a consortium of the Island’s public and private water suppliers.
