Beer, Bavarian food and traditional Oktoberfest festivities returned to Oceanside on Sept. 19 as Barrier Brewing Company hosted its fifth annual Oktoberfest celebration.
The event brought guests to the brewery for an afternoon of German-inspired food and drinks, live music, games and costume contests. Attendees were encouraged to dress in traditional lederhosen and dirndls, with prizes awarded for the best male, female and couples costumes.
The Bratwurst Boys provided the musical entertainment, returning to the celebration for another year with traditional German-inspired tunes. Food was served by 3rd Rail Kitchen and Toasted Oysters, with a menu that included bratwurst, , Bavarian pretzels, potato pancakes, veal schnitzel, chicken and a lemon-pepper arugula salad. Toasted Oysters also served Blue Point oysters sourced from the Great South Bay.
Guests could sample beer, wine, cider, hard tea and German-inspired cocktails, while new Barrier Brewing-branded half-liter steins were available for purchase.
The celebration also featured a variety of traditional Oktoberfest games and competitions, including Masskrugstemmen, a stein-holding contest for men and women, as well as Stump Strike, a traditional hammer game.
Admission also included an afterparty at the brewery featuring DJ Jay Defiance, giving guests an opportunity to continue the celebration into the evening.
