Bridges program connects Oceanside students to community service

Oceanside High School students in the district’s Bridges program spent Dec. 5 immersed in service learning, partnering with Long Island Volunteers and Farmingdale State College to support community members across Nassau County.

Throughout the day, students rotated through hands-on projects designed to connect them with local needs. They created artwork for Stars of Hope, a nonprofit that provides emotional support to communities recovering from crises through messages of color and encouragement. Students also wrote letters to military personnel stationed oversees and assembled hygiene kits for residents facing hardships.

Later, the group helped staff the Long Island Volunteer Center, greeting visitors, directing donations and distributing programs for the center’s volunteer fair. They also sorted through donated toys and nonperishable food, checking items for quality before organizing and inventorying them for distribution.

Program leaders closed the day with a debriefing session to help students reflect on their experiences and learn more about volunteerism’s role in strengthening communities.

The activities are part of the Bridges program’s yearlong focus on service and civic engagement. Bridges, a multiyear initiative shared by the Oceanside and Uniondale school districts, brings students together beginning seventh grade and follows them through graduation. The program is designed to foster cross-cultural understanding, critical thinking and leadership by connecting students who might not otherwise meet and encouraging them to collaborate in meaningful projects.
