The Island Park and Oceanside communities held respective Memorial Day parades over the holiday weekend, which included patriotic tunes, memorial services and speeches by local officials.

The parade in Island Park took place on May 29, and started at Village Hall. Island Park students, members of the America Legion Post 1029 and other organizations marched toward the veterans memorial on the corner of Long Beach Road and Waterford Road, where the monument was re-dedicated during a memorial service. A new plaque was mounted on a new, granite pedestal to mark the occasion, said American Legion's John Marino.

During Oceanside's parade on May 31, members of the Oceanside VFW Post 5199 and other organizations paid tribute to fallen soldiers during a memorial service at Oceanside High School. The parade, which commenced on Foxhurst Road between Long Beach Road and Oceanside Road, was organized by the VFW. Its grand marshals were Bob Perdicaro, a Korean War veteran, and Bob Pickoring, a Vietnam War veteran.
