Possible Memorial Day parade set in Wantagh

Posted

John Sottnik, the vice commander of the Wantagh American Legion Post 1273, sent out a letter on April 29 letting the community know that the post applied for a Wantagh Memorial Day Parade permit.

However, whether a parade will be held or not is at the discretion of Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“So, we must be prepared for a last-minute decision from the state, and we ask that you plan for the parade but be flexible if we are required to cancel,” Sottnik wrote in the letter. “If the parade will be permitted, we cordially invite you to march and participate in the Wantagh Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony that we will be hosted on Monday,  May 31.”

Assembly for the parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Beltagh Avenue near the Wantagh Middle School and the parade will step off at 10 a.m. The parade will end at the American Legion Post on Park Avenue.

There will be a Memorial Day Ceremony at the American Legion either at the end of the parade or at 11 a.m. The ceremony will take place, rain or shine, regardless of if there will be a parade or not. For those who wish to present a floral wreath at the ceremony, they should have the wreath delivered to the post by 9 a.m.

Parade participants, viewers, and those attending the ceremony should follow all Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations for social distancing and face coverings.
