Oceanside High School’s varsity quarterback Shane Harmon took part in the second annual Long Island Quarterback Challenge held at Kings Park High School on July 23.

Harmon, 15, was one of more than a dozen quarterbacks who competed in the event. The QBs were selected, each along with their two wide receivers, to participate in the one-day competition to find the top high school quarterback on Long Island.

Harmon brought his Oceanside Sailor teammates Jacob Stern and Chris Lalima.

“It was a fun experience,” Harmon said. “I’m glad I was chosen to be a part of this, and I was really happy to get out there to compete with the other quarterbacks — especially before the start of the season.”

Coordinated by Jonathan Gill — former interim coach at Long Island University — the quarterbacks were put through a variety of drills that measured their anticipation, accuracy and overall play. The judge was former University of Tennessee and professional quarterback Matt Simms.

The National Football Foundation has been in existence since 1947, and is dedicated to promoting amateur football and honoring those individuals that serve the game. There are 120 chapters throughout the country with more than 14,000 members — all who are volunteers that believe in the positive role athletics can play in the development of our youth.

The Suffolk County chapter has been in existence since 1995, and during that time has awarded more than $300,000 to deserving students for their academic and athletic excellence.

“We’re very pleased with this year’s event,” said Len Genova, president of the football foundation’s Suffolk chapter. “The turnout was great, and the level of performance by the quarterbacks was tremendously improved over last year. They are a very talented group of quarterbacks.”

This year’s top honors went to Syosset High School’s Mustafa Mozawalla, and his wide receivers Adam Marvin and Jack Monaco.

“It was a pleasure to watch Shane, Chris and Jacob compete in this event,” said their head coach, Rob Blount. “It was nice to see Shane compete with some of the other top quarterbacks on Long Island. Entering his sophomore year, we are excited to watch his continued growth and, more importantly, our team.

“We feel we are in a good place as we enter this next phase of growing our program, and we are excited that these three players will all play a big part in it.”
