My sister and I called our father’s friends “Uncle Jack” and “Aunt Sue” Smith (not their real last name). We lived in Mount Vernon, the boot of Westchester County, and they lived in Floral Park. My sister and I believe our dad met Jack through work: Both were vacuum cleaner salesman. more
The key is to address problems with the school rather than automatically trying to solve every problem for the child. Children need opportunities to develop independence, responsibility and confidence. Those qualities develop when they are given the chance to navigate challenges themselves. more
That is an onerous burden for those property owners, because in many cases they have absolutely no control over the infrastructure the county constructs. Moreover, such an approach may solve the problem for the time being, but it glosses over fundamental flaws in government that must be corrected in the interest of both public safety and fairness. more

What I wasn’t prepared for was the rise of lacrosse, the fastest game on two feet. Over the past 15 years, with four kids playing lacrosse, I’ve watched well over a thousand games in more than a dozen states. Youth tournaments, high school rivalries and even a state championship have become part of our family’s story. more
