The Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District Board of Education on Wednesday reviewed a restructuring of the district’s central office, received an update on preparations for the upcoming school year and discussed assignments for several board subcommittees.
Here are three things to know from the Aug. 19 meeting.
1. District restructures central office following administrator’s departure
The district is moving forward with a streamlined central office structure following the resignation of its executive director for curriculum and instruction.
Superintendent Francesco Ianni said the vacancy created an opportunity to evaluate the district’s administrative structure and redistribute responsibilities without eliminating essential functions.
Under the new model, the district will not rehire to fill the position. Responsibilities will be distributed among existing administrators.
The district has also created elementary and secondary curriculum associate positions focused on curriculum development, assessment support and instructional coaching.
2. District prepares for students’ return
With the school year approaching, district officials said staff members have spent the summer preparing buildings and programs for students.
Ianni highlighted the work of custodians, nurses, grounds crews, clerical staff, administrators and teachers.
Student representative Sophia Staphos also addressed the board about upcoming transition programs.
A Common App Bootcamp will help rising seniors prepare for college applications. Rising seventh graders will participate in “Giving Day,” which will allow students to become familiar with the school building, classrooms and lockers before the first day.
3. Board discusses committees and district priorities
The board discussed assignments for several district-wide committees, including safety, wellness, academic and legislative committees.
The legislative committee was described as a forum for addressing issues affecting the district and education more broadly with elected officials and other legislators.
The board also approved personnel, business, special services and new business resolutions during the meeting.
As the district prepares for the Sept. 1 start of classes, Ianni added that the central focus of the administrative changes remains student success.
“But ultimately, we focus on making sure that the students have what they need to be successful,” he said.
