Neighbors from around Long Island stretched their legs out to walk or run the Race to the Rink 5K hosted by the New York Islanders on April 7.

The event raised money to benefit Easterseals NY, an organization that advocates and provides services for people with disabilities. Easterseals was founded more than a century ago, and works to enhance quality of life and expand local access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Participants of all skill levels laced up their sneakers for the race at 9 a.m. after paying a $40 registration fee. They received a t-shirt and lanyard for participating in the 5K. The Islanders Children’s Foundation supported the event.

15-year-old Nicholas DiCapario from Miller Place finished in first place with a time of 18:34.08. Garrett Viola of Hicksville finished second with a time of 19:28.3. Karley Nelson of Manhasset finished fourth overall and was the first woman to finish in a time of 19:38.38.
