Bellmore-Merrick Central District proms might have ended around midnight last Thursday, but more seniors than ever headed over to Zachary's in East Meadow to keep on dancing through the night. The third annual post-prom party, hosted by the Bellmore-Merrick Wellness Council, attracted 270 seniors and their dates this year, compared with 200 last year and 120 in the event's first year. more
North Bellmore residents recently got a taste of up-and-coming artists in their own backyard. Local teens submitted their own art to the North Bellmore Library over the past month. A Bellmore resident was arrested and charged in a sexual abuse case that allegedly occurred on June 17 in Westbury. According to Nassau County Police, Bellmore resident Memet Arslan, 32, who owns Mediterranean Kebab Restaurant in Westbury, was locking up his restaurant after all the cooks and servers had left. The defendant locked the doors to the restaurant knowing that there was still a 16-year-old girl inside. more

If any team were to define dynasty, it would be the Calhoun High School girls' badminton squad. The team, led by coach Gregg Muscarella, is 138-5 in matches over the past nine years. In that time, the Colts have won six county championships, as well as eight Conference I titles. more
Kayla Babbush, a sophomore at Kennedy High School in Bellmore, has been working with the Robbie Levine Foundation to bring free CPR/AED training to the Central High School District. The Robbie Levine Foundation was created by Dr. Craig and Jill Levine of Merrick, whose 9-year old son Robbie died suddenly when his heart stopped at a baseball practice in 2005. more
Mepham High School graduate Sade Ayinde has been named to the 21-player roster for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Germany this July. Sade, who recently played with the U-20 team during a two-week training camp in California, will be a junior at the University of Maryland in the fall. more
