At 2:49 p.m. on April 15, two pressure-cooker bombs loaded with ball bearings and nails detonated near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, on Boylston Street, shrouding two blocks of multistory brick buildings in white smoke and sending shrapnel hurtling in all directions. Three people were killed and 264 injured in the terrorist attack. The Oct. 26 dual girls’ swim meet between the Bellmore-Merrick Lady Sharks and the Garden City Trojans bore many similarities to last year’s contest between two, which are among the county’s strongest squads. The teams’ supporters turned out at Hofstra University in droves, cheering loudly. The Sharks were the underdogs once again, as they began the season as the third seed in their conference. And the Bellmore-Merrick girls proved to have the necessary skills and drive to knock off their rivals, winning what coach Robert Kaefer described as the biggest dual meet of the year. more

A summer of togetherness on the soccer field has helped pay big dividends for Calhoun’s boys’ varsity team during the 2013 campaign. Almost the entire starting lineup took the field together for an eight-game summer league, and the chemistry has carried over to the fall. more
