On the lacrosse field, Merrick’s Danny Hartman and Wantagh’s Mike McKee are rivals. Hartman, 16, plays for Kennedy, and McKee, also 16, plays for MacArthur. Though the schools play in different conferences, the teams scrimmage each other every year, and the two said they waste no time seeking each other out when they play on the same field.
“I always try to match up against him and see what we do,” said McKee, a defenseman.

Stories compel. Statistics numb. When I wrote last week about 30,000 children under the age of 5 who died of starvation in drought-ravaged East Africa in 2011, my guess is the number, tragic as it is, did not linger in the mind.

The Rockville Centre St. Patrick’s Parade Committee has chosen Long Island’s leading service provider for children and adults with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities, a Long Island provider of a “home-away-from-home” for the parents and siblings of hospitalized children and a national provider of service dogs for the severely disabled as the three charities it will financially support with the parade, scheduled for March 24.

To celebrate the lives of three young Camp ANCHOR counselors who died in a tragic car accident last July, and to raise money for the foundations and scholarships established in their names, the Malone-Mulhall Benefit Basketball Game is set for July 30 at St. John’s University at 1:30 p.m. The event will also include three-point and dunk contests.
