Vote 'yes' on the Bellmore-Merrick Central District budget

Voting for the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s $139.5 million budget should be a no-brainer for local residents. Newsweek recently ranked all three of the Central District’s high schools –– Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham –– among the top 600 high schools in the nation –– out of more than 26,000 high schools. We can only say, Wow! more

Mepham parents raise field safety questions

A group of a half-dozen Mepham High School parents spoke out at the May 8 Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education meeting, calling on the district to replace the old wooden visitors bleachers at the Mepham football field. A number of the seats have worn out or rotted through, and parents said they believe someone will eventually fall from the bleachers and get hurt unless they are fixed. more

Bellmore-Merrick high schools rank high on Newsweek list

Newsweek magazine and The Daily Beast, in its recently published “America’s Best High Schools” list, included 18 high schools from New York’s 4th Congressional District, which covers much of southwest Nassau County. All three of Bellmore-Merrick’s high schools –– Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham –– were on the list. more

While the baseball team at Calhoun was busy winning two of the past three Nassau Class AA titles, the softball program was flying under the radar, so to speak. However, the girls have made a name for themselves on the diamond this spring. more

Austin Hecker and his mom, Heidi Hecker, of Merrick, were watching TV one day when they saw American speed skater and Olympic champion Apolo Ohno making a guest appearance on the talk show “The Doctors.” Ohno was discussing his experience with exercise induced bronchospasm, also known as exercise induced asthma, a medical condition characterized by tightening of breathing airways due to extra production of mucus during exercise. more
