John Ciotti, an original member of the Nassau County Legislature, is running for his ninth two-year term to represent the 3rd Legislative District. The North Valley Stream resident serves as deputy presiding officer for the Republican majority. Carrié Solages, a Democrat from Elmont, is challenging Ciotti. Two years ago, Solages ran unsuccessfully for county clerk. He works for his family law firm and is a lifelong resident of the community.

While it might be easy to overlook the office of county clerk, the office plays an important role in keeping Nassau County’s court cases and real estate humming. They hum now, at least, and that’s in large part the work of County Clerk Maureen O’Connell, who has earned the Herald’s endorsement.

For residents of Nassau County, dealing with the county clerk is something that needs to be done only sparingly — when registering a business, closing on a home or filing litigation. But thousands of people use the services of the office every day, and while it is politically low-profile, it is vital to the county’s operations.
