The sixth-seeded Rams threw their best punch in last Friday’s Nassau Class A boys’ basketball quarterfinal playoff game at Hofstra, but it wasn’t enough to deliver a knockout. The No. 3 Cyclones prevailed, 46-44, behind Leon Taylor’s 16 points and Brett Cohen’s nine points and 10 rebounds.

On a night that saw defending Nassau Class A boys’ basketball champion Roslyn eliminated and top-seeded Elmont barely avoid a colossal upset, No. 3 South Side played as fine a half as it has all season on the way to a 56-41 victory over Lawrence before a crowd of 500 last Friday.

Three weeks ago, Tara Brenke, 17, and her brother, Xavier, 16, arrived in the U.S. from Haiti with little more than the clothes on their backs. Last month's earthquake had destroyed everything around them — their Port-au-Prince home, their high school, even the medical college Tara was planning to attend next year. Their parents — who survived the quake — decided that it would be best for the teens to come to America and live with a cousin, Erick Brenke, a mortgage banker, and his fiancee, Crystal Pearl, an earth science teacher, in their Island Park home.
