On Sept. 18, my two passengers and I were trapped in my car, which got stuck in a flood between 59 and 55 Lyons St. in Valley Stream around 9 p.m. All four windows and doors wouldn’t open since the car had no power. Within minutes, water started to seep into the car.

Valley Stream residents didn’t get many answers during an often contentious meeting about the status of federal flood maps on Monday night at the Forest Road School. About 100 residents attended the meeting hosted by the Mill Brook Civic Association, and many were upset that a representative from the Federal Emergency Management Agency came with no new information.

In the four years that Charles Dickens has lived on Woodside Avenue, he has had to deal with two major floods. The first time, he wasn’t prepared. Having been told that his home was not in a flood zone, he had no flood insurance, and his homeowner’s policy did not cover the damage to his den and basement. He had to replace the carpet and furniture and restore the walls in both rooms.
