The Long Island Motor Parkway, built in 1908, extended 45 miles and connected Fresh Meadows, Queens, to Lake Ronkonkoma in Suffolk County. The private toll road, built by entrepreneur William Vanderbilt, was the first in the U.S. designed exclusively for automobiles.

It began as a simple act of kindness — assisting elderly neighbors by providing transportation to and from medical appointments — that spawned an organization called Friends in Safe Hands, or FISH. This group is a non-sectarian network of concerned volunteers providing friendship and service to the elderly.

The message is simple –– Keep two eyes on the road, two hands on the wheel. Sadly, however, it’s too often ignored by teen drivers, with tragic consequences. Last year the State Farm insurance company began its “Celebrate My Drive” campaign to telegraph such messages to young people. Now the Bellmore-Merrick Community Parent Center is urging students from the Central District’s five schools to join in the effort.
