The League of Women Voters hosted a Meet the Candidates Night at East Rockaway High School on May 10. Three candidates, Patti Nicoletti, Kristin Ochtera and Sam Schwarzman are running for three available seats on the school board. Pat Sympson was the moderator. Thirteen questions were provided by members of the audience and answered by the three candidates. They had time for a three-minute summation at the end of the forum. more
The Coalition for Youth in East Rockaway became an official organization within the village of East Rockaway on April 29, forming an unprecedented alliance between the village and the school district. With Deputy Mayor Richard Meagher at the helm, the meeting was attended by dozens of interested parents, school, PTA and village officials, and concerned residents. more
A second public forum will be held on Wednesday, May 12 to discuss the proposed rezoning of the industrial district in East Rockaway. At the last meeting, held at Rocco's catering on Main Street, the establishment had to turn away hundreds of concerned residents who could not be seated in the filled-to-capacity meeting hall. more

The East Rockaway Village Board unanimously adopted its 2010-11 village budget of $8.9 million on April 19. The spending plan contains a 1.6 percent increase over the current budget and a 5.43 percent tax levy increase. The average homeowner will pay an extra $110 in taxes. more
More than 300 concerned East Rockaway residents packed Rocco’s Catering Hall on Main Street last Thursday to vocalize their fears about a proposed rezoning of the village’s small industrial area, located along Ocean Avenue near the East Rockaway Long Island Rail Road station. Hundreds more who lined the sidewalk outside had to be turned away due to space limitations. more
