I’m not going to lie. I’ve been waiting more than five years for Valley Stream to have a street festival, like the one planned for this Saturday. I’ve seen or heard about similar events in Merrick, Bellmore, West Hempstead and East Rockaway, where the Herald has other papers, and was admittedly a little jealous.

On any given day, Rockaway Avenue sees its fair share of action, with people from all over Long Island coming to the Valley Stream business district to shop and dine. But this Saturday looks to be one of the most eventful days in the avenue’s history, when it will be the site of the long-awaited Valley Stream Community Fest.

Thank you to the Valley Stream Herald for covering our committee’s work toward putting together a day of community right here on Rockaway Avenue (“The minds behind the Community Fest,” Sept. 6-12). Nearly 500 people streamed through the Baldwin Public Library Job Fair on Sept 13. Some looked sharp and professional; others wore suits that looked as if they hadn’t seen the light of day in decades. Many carried resumes, briefcases and hopeful looks. But the thing on everyone’s mind that sunny morning, as a touch of fall crispness graced the air, could be summed up in a single word: work.

Strong winds blew vendors’ tents here and there, and there was talk of heavy rain pounding Queens and two tornadoes touching down in New York City, at the Merrick Fall Festival on Saturday. But the weather held, the annual festival carried on, and folks had a blast!
