Lately, it seems, the plane noise in Malverne has been even more bothersome than usual.
When Malverne held its 9/11 candlelight vigil last week, it was in the middle of a six-hour period in which dozens of planes roared overhead, making it almost impossible to hear Deputy Mayor Patricia Fitzpatrick during the ceremony. Malvernite Elaine Miller, who keeps track of planes flying over the village, said that from Sept. 1-8, 270 to 300 planes had flown over her house each day. “On Sept. 8, they sent us another 60 planes on top of that,” she said. “It was a solid 14 to 17 hours per day of plane noise.”

Last December, Malverne’s beloved football coach, Colbert Britt, an educator and an inspiration to thousands of Malverne High School students for four decades, died. Last week, initial steps were taken to recognize his contribution by naming the high school football field in his honor.

After working with engineers for the past several months, the Village of Malverne is in the final stages of creating a bidding document that will request estimates for a complete overhaul of targeted roads throughout the village.

Malverne took its hat off to a new clothier last week, when the La Benes women’s boutique held its grand opening at its location on 122 Broadway in the village.
After hosting 10 successful preview days in late August and early September, the shop held kicked off its opening with a ribbon cutting, village and town politicians, residents, family and friends last Saturday.
