Camp Barrett, the village of Valley Stream's summer camp program, held its annual Carnival Day on Aug. 3. There was a bounce castle, dunk tank, slip and slide, face painting and numerous carnival games.

On a typical morning, about 300 children, teens and adults are scattered throughout Barrett Park, home to Valley Stream’s summer camp. But there’s far fewer last names, as many sets of siblings go there together as campers, or work there together as counselors. And, in a few cases, there’s one of each in a family.

Drivers on Merrick Avenue in North Merrick may have noticed that a large construction project is under way at Camp Avenue Elementary School.
The work is part of a $1.2 million capital project that was approved by North Merrick voters last December. Of that money, $552,000 was slated for exterior repairs at the Camp Avenue and Old Mill Road schools.
